HIGH ALTITUDE TRAINING
Many commercial helicopter operations involve flying in mountainous terrain or high-altitude conditions. Specialized skills are required to fly safely in these environments, and there is no better place to gain this knowledge and skills than the Swiss Alps.
HELIFLY prepares pilots to operate in these conditions by training them in specialized methods and techniques for flight planning, takeoff, enroute, and approach maneuvers. Knowledge of mountain winds and weather becomes critical, as winds can be extremely variable, and weather can change dramatically within a matter of minutes. High-altitude conditions also require a comprehensive understanding of helicopter performance and limitations, and how to manage available power to ensure safe flight within those limits.
HELIFLY operates from various locations in Switzerland, allowing more time to fly in the mountains and less time traveling to them. Our curriculum is certified by the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) and based on real-world experiences and situations. This ensures that you gain the skills necessary to safely operate in all kinds of mountain conditions. With such a diverse range of mountains nearby, students will gain experience flying at altitudes between 6,000 and 14,000 feet.
While this course is mandatory for pilots performing high-altitude mountain landings in Switzerland, it is also highly beneficial for all helicopter pilots. The program develops judgment, planning, power management and decision-making skills. In addition, the finesse needed to operate close to the helicopter’s performance limits can also be invaluable when flying at lower altitudes in demanding conditions.
The length of the program can be tailored based on training requirements. If desired, graduation from the certified course can be completed with a check ride provided by a FOCA inspector. Upon successful completion, an attachment to your pilot license will be issued.
